The most prominent ability used in BOXBOY! games is the players ability to make boxes which can be used as platforms or as a defence. Boxes are also often used to activate certain mechanisms. If players attempt to create boxes whilst some have been placed already, the existing boxes will disappear. Players can create boxes to the left, right, and above them, but cannot create boxes directly below themselves.

Box Limit

In each stage, Qbby has the ability to create a limited number of boxes. This varies per level, but is often 1 to 4.

Additionally, each stage a total number of boxes which acts as a countdown. If this number is exceeded, the crown in the level will disappear. Players can still complete the level without aquiring the crown. This feature is not present in BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL!, but is in the previous three games. In place of a box countdown, BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! has a target which rewards players with Target Medals.

The Wizard costume can be equipped increase Qbby's box limit by 1.

Characters with the Ability to Create Boxes

Boxes can be created by all playable characters, including;

• Qbby, whose uses simple white square-shaped boxes
• Qucy, whose boxes are identical to Qbby's save a bow in the upper right corner
• Qudy, whose boxes are oblong-shaped
