Qbby is the main protagonist and primary playable character of the BOXBOY! Trilogy.
Physical Appearance
Qbby is a small white square box with two eyes and two legs.
Gameplay
BOXBOY!
Qbby has the power to create more boxes around him, though the number he can create depends on the certain stage he is in. Special costumes can change the gameplay slightly; for example, the Wizard costume can increase his box limit.
BOXBOXBOY!
The same applies for the second installment in the series, except that Qbby can create two sets of boxes. The box limit now applies to both sets (not combined) as well. If save data is found from BOXBOY! and the user unlocked it, special costumes (like the Wizard costume) still work with their intended functions.
BYE-BYE BOXBOY!
Qbby can create one set of boxes, as per the first game. All rules from the original apply, except that in certain levels Qbby can be granted special abilities that allow his boxes to perform helpful actions. If save data is found from BOXBOY! and the user unlocked it, special costumes (like the Wizard costume) still work with their intended functions.
Appearances in other media
- Qbby appears as a collectible sticker in Kirby: Planet Robobot. Qbby also makes a small cameo in Kirby Star Allies; one of the possible forms Kirby can take with the Stone ability shows Qbby sitting on the HAL Laboratory's Yamanashi R&D Center next to Mt. Fuji.
- Qbby makes cameos in Part Time UFO[1], appearing in the background of levels.
- A costume is also available for purchase in Part Time UFO called "Qbby's UFO" which, when equipped, makes the player resemble Qbby, and, in 2-player mode on the Nintendo Switch version, the second player's costume resembles Qucy
- Qbby appears as a Support spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He is an ace level spirit that gives players an Ore Club in battle.
- Qbby makes an appearance in all six of the BOXBOY! sets available in Nintendo Badge Arcade.
Trivia
- Qbby is technically a cube, not a square. Due to the 2D format of every game in the series, he is always depicted as a square in-game. Some of the comics and the Qbby amiibo, among other material, depict Qbby as a cube.[2]
- In one of the unlockable comics in
, Qbby is seen wearing Robobot Armor - this is a reference to Kirby: Planet Robobot.
- Qbby is not a good chef.[3]
- It is speculated that Qbby is the unnamed Qbaby with blue cheeks from
as an adult, however this is unconfirmed.
- Qbby's name is said to "seem familiar somehow..." which may imply that his name is meant to be a parody of Kirby, the main protagonist of another game series made by HAL Laboratory.[4]
