As the BOXBOY! series is a puzzle game, the majority of the game's focus is on solving puzzles. However, there is a minimal storyline present throughout all four games, which can be tied together to make a story. As the story is not the main focus of the games, several aspects of the story are left up to players' interpretation - however, there are some commonly agreed-upon theories regarding the lore of the ''BOXBOY!'' series.
Despite the official statement from Nintendo's YouTube channel, a more prevalent theory is that the game is not a sequel - rather, it is instead a prequel to the trilogy's events. This theory is evidenced by many small details prevalent in ''BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL!'s'' various ending cutscenes, which line up with the beginning of ''BOXBOY!'':

Placement of BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL!

The canonical placement of BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! in the BOXBOY! series timeline is an occasional topic of discussion among the BOXBOY! community. It is not officially part of the BOXBOY! trilogy, as BYE-BYE BOXBOY! was officially referred to as the final game in the trilogy[1], so the game may take place before or after the events of the trilogy. An official trailer for the game released by Nintendo, titled "BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! - The Story So Far - Nintendo Switch", describes BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! as "the next chapter in BOXBOY!"[2], which is presumably referring to the trilogy - this appears to be the only true explanation from an official source as to where the game takes place.

Despite the official statement from Nintendo's YouTube channel, a more prevalent theory is that the game is not a sequel - rather, it is instead a prequel to the trilogy's events. This theory is evidenced by many small details prevalent in BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL!'s various ending cutscenes, which line up with the beginning of BOXBOY!:

  • In A Tale For One's "bad ending", after Qbby and Qucy fail to stop the black smoke meteor from colliding with the Box Planet, several chunks of debris crash onto the Box Planet. Among this debris is a box covered in black smoke with his eyes shut. Shortly after this happens, a box falls from the sky, and lands to the right of the blackened box, as some text saying "To be continued" appears. This scene is very similar to the beginning of BOXBOY!, where Qbby falls from the sky, and lands to the right of a blacked-out box with his eyes shut.
  • In A Tall Tale's ending, Qudy is rescued by two boxes resembling Qbby and Qucy, who are in the Box Ship. Despite their resemblance, these boxes cannot be Qbby and/or Qucy, as they were on the black smoke meteor during that time. These boxes also cannot be Box Mom and/or Box Dad, as they sacrificed themselves to send Box Baby onto the Box Ship. The only two boxes that were remaining on the Box Ship after Qudy left it were Box Baby and an unnamed Qbaby. By process of elimination, it can be inferred that the two boxes who saved Qudy at the end of the campaign were the now-matured Box Baby and unnamed Qbaby. After Qudy is rescued, the Box Ship speeds towards the Box Planet. In BOXBOY!, the Box Ship appears to be present at the same location.
