The Shop is a recurring location within the BOXBOY! series where the player can purchase various items. These items are not required to complete the game, they are either meant to make levels easier to complete or they just serve as fun novelties with no gameplay benefit. Throughout the four main games in the series, the Shop has changed in terms of presentation, what items can be purchased, and the currencies required to purchase said items, but its most notable redesign was in BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL!.
BOXBOY!
The first major version of the Shop was introduced in BOXBOY! and would remain until BYE-BYE BOXBOY!. The only currency used in the first version of the shop are Medals.
In he shop sells costumes, the game's original soundtrack (each track is sold individually), challenge stages (in the form of Time Attack and Score Attack stages), and tip books.
BOXBOXBOY!
In BOXBOXBOY!, the shop's items have been modified. The "Tips and Tricks" section is removed and can instead be viewed for free on the pause menu, and short comics replace it in the Shop. Time Attack and Score Attack were completely absent from this game, and were instead replaced with World CW, a free unlockable challenge world in which Qbby must complete a level using a special costume.
BYE-BYE BOXBOY!
The shop's items were also modified in BYE-BYE BOXBOY!, with more new costumes to unlock with medals or Amiibo, comics and songs. Challenge Stages returned in this game, this time being fairly short levels that have to be completed without jumping, using the Up Hook, etc.
BOXBOY! Series Demo Version
The most barebones Shop to date for obvious reasons, BOXBOY! Series Demo Version only has costumes and comics available for purchase, which are assortments of the costumes and comics from the previous games.
BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL!
In BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL!, the shop was completely revamped for the first time since the series' inception, both in terms of what items can be purchased and how they can be bought.
The Shop now uses two currencies: Medals return and are joined by the new Target Medals. Medals are used to purchase Assist Items, music, Balloon Challenge stages, and comics, and Target Medals are used to purchase a random accessory from the dress-up box. Costumes were also revamped in this game, as instead of paying for costumes directly, accessories are randomly drawn from the Dress-up Box for 30 Target Medals. New to this Shop are assist items, which can be used during stage selection to make levels slightly easier for the player to complete. Songs and comics return as normal, and Challenge Levels also make a return in this game, as Balloon Challenges.
